Drama

The drama group had put up a good show on the project night. The plot was adopted and modified from an Indonesian folktale, the three brothers. The actors showed confidence and the acting was natural.

Nevertheless, there are two areas which the drama group could have done better. Firstly, the setting up of the scene was done using power point slides which I think is a convenient but not a very good idea. The group should have been aware of the limitations of the stage in the lecture theatre. For instance, the lighting is not designed to suit stage performance and there is no spot light. Thus, they have to keep the lights on at all time and the power point slides may not be seen clearly from the back of the lecture theatre. Since there is no back stage in the lecture theatre, there might be times when all the actors are on stage but not all of them are involved in the acting. By dividing the big stage into different sections, distinction between different scenes will be more obvious. Most importantly, the placement of the props can demarcate the boundaries of the scenes so that it will be clearer to the audiences on what is happening.

Secondly, the acting throughout was fine except during the point when the youngest brother was talking to his brothers. While he was speaking he turned towards his brothers such that his entire back face the audience. This is a major mistake and should be avoided at all time. It is because unlike drama on the television, there is no camera to close up on him so the audience will not be able to see his expression and his acting. Moreover, the actors did not wear a microphone, therefore, by back facing the audience, the voice is unable to be projected forward and the audience might not catch what he said.

However, I do understand that there are 5 members in the drama group and they are not professional actors. Given the amount of time allocated for rehearsal and practicing, they indeed have done a very good job.
